Add to basketStevenson's sixth full-length work is an adventure and romantic novel set during the War of the Roses, featuring a young man, Richard Shelton,how he becomes a knight, saves his lady, Joanna Sedley, and obtains justice for the murder of his father. Early printing, First Scribner's Sons edition, with illustrations by N.C. Wyeth. About 7 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, 328 pages in red cloth-covered boards. Front cover features full-color, full-cover illustration of two men in a forest, one holding a crossbow, with title and author on ribbon at top of cover. Lettering on spine is gold and notes illustrator is Wyeth. The inside covers and end pages are decorated with b&w drawings and title page is decorated with painting of three men in armor on horseback. There are 14 Wyeth illustrations spaced throughout the book. This copy is worn with lightly bumped corners and spine ends and some sun-fade to the spine. Front end page shows previous owner's name in pencil. Occasional small stains in text and text block's untrimmed fore and bottom edges show soiling. Front hinge is cracked and binding is somewhat loose but holding well. Overall, text block and Illustrations are clean, complete and unmarked. This makes a good reading/study copy.
