Item description from seller

A first impression of the first edition, published in 1957. Jacket designed by Lynton Lamb. ***Very good in green cloth-covered boards, with silver titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased, with a very light vertical reading crease to the spine. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges quite clean but with some light foxing. Virtually no internal foxing, but offsetting to the endpapers. No inscriptions or annotations. Pages clean and uncreased. ***In a very good original illustrated dustwrapper, designed by Lynton Lamb. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 16s. net. The dustwrapper is complete, with no serious creases, chips or tears. There is some rubbing and creasing at the edges, and some small closed tears at the top of the spine. The back panel, although a white background, is very fresh and clean. The dustwrapper is otherwise complete with fresh and vibrant colours. Spine unfaded. ***204mm x 140mm. 279 pages. ***'This is Indian country. Across the arroyo the thin high wail of a lonely singer re-echoes back off the dark mountains. Deep in this country, in the great house of petrified wood which their father had built 100 years before, lived two brothers, George and Alexander Bowman. For George the country and the Indians, whom he loved and understood, were his whole life. But his beautiful young wife Perrette, whom he had brought to Indian country, grew restless when the novelty wore off; and Alexander was restless too, with a yearning to travel and the itch to be a writer. The Indians, wiser than George, saw this. But their warnings fell on deaf ears, and all the greater was the shock when Alexander and Perrette ran away together. What happened to these two strongly contrasted brothers, how the one deteriorated with success, and how the other, left behind with the Indians, grew with their help out of bitterness to serenity, is the backbone to Mr. Eastlake's deeply compelling novel. Its special distinction, however, lies in the author's extraordinary comprehension and sympathy with the Indians, who people this wide, fierce, lovely, wondrous land. They take George Bowman under their friendly wing. Made for laughter, they make us laugh, and wonder, too. They come, in fact, to dominate the book.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first impression of the first edition, in very good original condition - with the added interest of the Lunton Lamb designed dustwrapper. Uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
