Sein Vater war als jüdisch-russischer Einwanderer in die USA gekommen und in einem New Yorker Waisenhaus aufgewachsen. Zu Avedons Markenzeichen gehört der weiße, leere Hintergrund, auf dem nichts vom Motiv ablenkt. Neben den Schönen und Prominenten der Welt lichtete der Künstler das Leben von Arbeitern, Demonstrationen gegen den Vietnamkrieg, Kriegsopfer und Landstreicher ab. Zum Jahreswechsel 1989/90 fotografierte er eine Reportageserie über Berliner nach dem Mauerfall. Seine Bilder gelten als schonungslos und detailgenau. 2004 starb Richard Avedon, der einer der berühmtesten Mode- und Porträtfotografen der Welt war.
