The 1936 edition of this scarce map drawn by Sven Erik Faber (1892-1976), a consulting engineer based in Shanghai from 1922. We have traced a copy of the 1937 edition at the University of Victoria, as well as three locations on WorldCat for other Shanghai maps issued by the Automobile Club of China in the 1920s and 1930s. Emanating from the Internal Settlement is a network stretching west to Songjiang and north to Jiading and Kunshan. The legend reminds motorists that "settlement or concession licenses are not valid on roads shown in red". The Automobile Club of China was founded in 1905. By the 1930s, its membership included not only expats but also many important Chinese figures, including General Wu Te-Chen, the prominent banker Tsuyee Pei, and the politician Chengting T. Wang. Its official magazine, China Highways, was edited by Carl Crow between 1934 and 1937. Faber spent his first six years in Shanghai working for the municipal council. In 1929, he established a private practice. Colour lithographed map (643 x 560 mm), creases where folded as issued, recently laid down on white paper. A little foxing and scuffing; near-fine.
