Collection of the poems of Roderick Flanagan, published posthumously by his brother Edward F Flanagan in Sydney (and in Ireland by MH Gill, Dublin) - Signed, dated (March '87) and with gift-inscription to front endpaper by EF Flanagan; Roderick Flanagan was of Irish extraction, arriving in Australia in 1840, working as a journalist for The Empire (owned by Henry Parkes) and contributing articles and poems to the People's Advocate and Freeman's Journal; he is best known for his history of New South Wales (1862) and also for his enlightened views on Indigenous Australians (a collection of his essays on this subject published in 1888, of which the Australian Dictionary of Biography states "His careful chapter on the Myall Creek massacre was a restrained exercise in the use of evidence to prove guilt."); his brother Edward Flanagan was a bookseller and notable Catholic in 19th Century Sydney; this copy ex-library (Public Library of Queensland), with library stamps throughout; endpapers and prelims tanned and foxed, scattered foxing in text; boards rubbed, spine a little crudely rebacked. no dustwrapper. 97pp. 8vo. ex-library.
