Item description from seller

London: for the author, and sold by J. Nunn, Great Queen Street, 1801. First edition. xxiv+12 plates+314p.+21[1] pages of index + 21 leaves, very faintly lined, with manuscript recipes on the first 8 leaves and the rest blank. Lacks title-page and half-title page. Photocopy of a first edition title-page loosely inserted. The book is shown to be a first edition from the date of August 1801 at the end of the preface; this date was changed to 1802 in the second edition. It would appear that the title-page was missing from a very early date, since there is a manuscript note on the dedication page, in what looks like the same 19th century hand as the recipes at the end of the book, noting the author, title and distributor of the work: 'Art of Cookery by John Mollard, Cook, one of the Proprietors of Freemasons Tavern, sold by J. Nunn, Great Queen Street.' Paper is tanned throughout, and there is foxing to the plates showing monthly menus, and to some pages elsewhere, together with a few marks and pencil annotations. Fraying and loss to some page edges. Book has been rebacked at some point in light brown leather, over older rubbed and worn boards. Binding is sound, endpaper hinges strengthened with tape. Bookplate of Joshua Bates to front pastedown, and circular label of Tysoe Manor to front free endpaper. The manuscript recipes are of interest, including such titles as 'To Make an Irish Stew', 'Camp Vinager' [sic], 'Ginger Wine', 'An Elixir', 'Calves Foot Pudding', 'Christmas Pudding', 'Milk of Roses', 'Mulligatawney Soup', 'Damson Cheese', 'Chowder - A Cod's Head and Shoulders', 'Eau de Cologne', and 'Punch'. Although in poor condition, this is an interesting copy of a very scarce edition.…
