The Army Quarterly was a British defence journal established in 1920 by Guy Dawnay and Cuthbert Headlam, both former British Army officers. It was known colloquially as the "AQ" and incorporated The United Service Magazine that was established in 1829. The title was changed to The Army Quarterly and Defence Journal in 1958, and it ceased publication in July 1999. The journal included a mixture of historical and topical articles, book reviews, advertisements, and notices. It received contributions from all ranks of officers, with the lessons to be learned from the First World War a subject of much debate. The volume for sale contains the issues for October 1925 and January 1926. A few of the articles are: Air Operations against the Lines of Communication of an Army by Col. M.A. Wingfield; The Offensive Side of Chemical Warfare by "OTAC"; Some Notes on Desert Warfare by Captain F.A.S. Clarke; Random Recollections of East Africa, 1914-1918, by Colonel G.M. Orr; The Turkish General Staff History of the Campaign in Gallipoli; The Relief of Mafeking - A Personal Narrative; and The Campaign in South Kurdistan, 1919, by Rev. J. C. Jones. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and front board. This copy is from the Camberley Staff College Library and has a few of the usual library indications. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth at the top of the spine and the spine is faded. There is a paper label with a reference number on the spine and a larger paper label on the front board. The contents are tight and clean with a label on the front fixced endpaper and some stamps on the front free endpaper, including a 'withdrawn' stamp. We can see no other library indications within the book. . Reprint of the 1912 edition. vi, 97pp. and 19 figures. There are pages 2 to 12 of a catalogue of other military books at the start and pages 13 to 19 at the end (printed on pink paper). This is a War Office manual, issued by command of the Army Council for the guidance of all concerned. It contains the following ten chapters: Sanitation in the Army; The Causes of Disease; The Chief Diseases of Soldiers; The Principles of Disease Prevention; Water; Food; Clothing, Eqipment, and Physical Training; Hygiene of the March; Barrack Sanitation; and Field Sanitation. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with rounded corners and gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and a few light dents on the front board. There is some fraying to the cloth at the spine ends and around the edges of the boards. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
