1959, First Edition, First Printing .Hardcover. Red Boards with gilded Armada on front board and dark brown lettering on lighter brown background. Some rubbing and slight tears on the binding. Endpapers track the journey of the Spanish Armada, and "were taken from an engraving by Augustine Ryther of a chart drawn by Robert Adams, one of a series published in a handsome folio in 1590 to illustrate an English translation of Petruccio Ubaldini's first narrative." Some underlining by prior owner. Written by Mattingly , a story of the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Not only was this the first modern naval battle, but what he describes as " a climatic event in the birth of Modern Europe. He tells this story in quite vivid detail, from Original sources, and as part of the bigger drama of diplomacy in the age of Elizabeth. There are 20 illustrations and 2 maps as well as notes "About The Calendar" that discusse the Gregorian Calendar and its history in literature as well as the meaning of its use.
