Item description from seller

First edition in English of Belgian architect, architectural theorist and Benedictine monk Dom H. van der Laan’s ambitious manifesto seeking the archetypal basis for architecture by triangulating nature, culture, and the built environment. Published in 1983 by E.J. Brill in Leiden following its original publication in Dutch in 1977. Architectonic Space presents a systematic philosophy of how architecture organizes space for human experience. It is widely considered to be one of the most influential theoretical works in 20th-century architectural thought. 8vo (6.5” x 9.75”), hardcover with photographic dust jacket, 204 pages, b/w diagrams and charts. Translated by Richard Padovan with a preface by S.J. van Embden. Minor bumping and rubbing to dj, with 0.25” open tear to spine head. Otherwise near fine.
