First edition Slim octavo. 48pp. Coated wrappers nicely printed in navy, red, and gilt. Wrappers soiled and worn with a small chip and short splits at the crown and a small chip on the unprinted lower wrap, front cover with a small corner stain slightly affecting the corner margin throughout, sound and near very good. Governor's complimentary copy with a slip tipped-on to the title page. Several mentions are made of the Civil War, including this haunting passage: "The coffining and removal from the dead from the field at Antietam, and their re-internment in their appropriate lots in the Cemetery is progressing." Ward was an abolitionist bfore the Civil War and afterword was involved in veteran care. He served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives representing New Jersey's 6th District.
