First edition, 12mo, xii, 263, [1] + [4]pp., of adverts, frontis., original publishers blind-stamp green cloth, light wear. A social-reform book by Julia Bainbrigge Wightman (1817-1898), often published under the name Mrs. Charles Wightman. Her husband, Charles Edward Leopold Wightman, contributed the preface. The book followed Wightman's highly successful 'Haste to the Rescue' (1859). It presents accounts of people whose lives were transformed through temperance and Christian social work in the parish of St Alkmund's, Shrewsbury. Contemporary descriptions note that it included life stories of working-class residents who described the benefits they experienced after giving up alcohol.
