First edition. Hand-colored folding map of the United States and plates of Fenimore Cooper and Daniel Webster are present; frontispiece of Washington and plates of Everett and Mercy's Dream are not. 292 + 16pp. of advertisements; 8.5 x 5.75 in.

Good. All corners bumped, front corners split; covers mildly rubbed and stained; some fraying at spine tips; two streaks of what appears to be on lower half of spine; white adhesive label to lower half as well; title still intact (just barely touched by paint); spine is rolled with the front board jutting out about a 1/4 inch over the rear board; hinges strong; textblock tight but overopening at center with binding gauze visible; text mostly clean with occasional stains (the title page has the most smudges and stains, as well as two light creases to bottom right corner); folding map good with a 2-inch closed tear from the left edge at the second fold (the missing flap of paper is folded behind the map in the photo), as well one open tear at a fold, and brown stains in the bottom margin only impacting the map border; plates are good save for tidelines, which are more prominent on the Cooper portrait, impacting the image.

"[Putnam] entered the book store of Jonathan Leavitt in New York in 1828, became a member of the firm Wiley and Putnam in 1840 and in 1841 went to London where he conducted a branch business. In 1848 he returned to New York, opened a publishing house, engaged in the production of finely illustrated books and established Putnam's Magazine 1853-56, which was resumed in 1868 and afterward merged with Scribner's Monthly. In 1866 he established the publishing firm now known as G. P. Putnam's Sons. He was an ardent advocate of international copyright reform, secretary for many years of the Publishers' Association, a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art [. . .]" [The Encyclopedia Americana, 1920].
