Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Altered States of Consciousness: A Book of Readings edited by Charles T. Tart. Scarce hardcover First Edition/1st Printing (1969) in Good+ condition. The dark charcoal gray cloth-covered boards are elegantly contrasted by gold spine lettering. The covers are in great shape with light rubbing to the corners and slightly indented spine caps. The binding is square and tight. There is minor abrasion to the front flyleaf, while the interior pages are clean and unmarked. A former owner's inkless debossed seal is present on the title page. Portions of the dust jacket are included for completeness and personal interest, though it is missing about two inches from the upper rear face and the upper edge of the front, which is why it is listed as not having a jacket. This book explores the study of human consciousness, a field once considered taboo in psychology but now gaining renewed scientific respect. It is the first work to present a broad scientific perspective on a variety of special states of consciousness, offering insight into altered states and their implications. The editor combines a humanistic approach with scientific precision, examining the increasing use of methods such as drugs, yoga, and self-hypnosis to produce altered states of consciousness. These experiences are framed as both a social issue and a potential avenue for personal and cultural transformation. Studies on psychedelics are included alongside discussions of mystical experiences, dream states, meditation, hypnosis, and brain wave feedback. This volume features 35 scientific papers that explore the range of altered states, the methods used to induce them, and their effects. The book demonstrates that these states can be studied scientifically while preserving their human richness. The book will be carefully packaged for shipment, protected with bubble wrap, and encased in a sturdy carton box. A USPS electronic tracking number will be issued free of charge.
