Sol Plaatje’s Mhudi is considered to be the first novel written in English by a black South African, however, An African Tragedy precedes it by 2 years and is the first work of fiction, written in English, by a black South African to be published in book form (Couzens, 2009). A fine copy, but for the ownership stamps of Prof P.J. de Vos to endpapers.
