Jeffrey C. Dillow’s Adventures in High Fantasy is a compact, classic‑era role‑playing supplement built around short, self‑contained scenarios designed for use with the High Fantasy RPG system. It reflects the early‑1980s design ethos: modular adventures, clear objectives, and a blend of exploration, problem‑solving, and mythic fantasy themes. The collection presents several stand‑alone adventures that can be dropped into an ongoing campaign or played as one‑shots. Each scenario emphasizes a different style of fantasy challenge—wilderness travel, dungeon exploration, moral choice, magical puzzles, and encounters with unusual creatures or ancient forces. The tone is heroic but grounded, with an emphasis on player agency and open‑ended solutions rather than rigid plot paths. The adventures typically revolve around: mysterious ruins or forgotten strongholds, magical artifacts with hidden dangers, factions or NPCs with competing motives, environmental hazards that require creative problem‑solving, moral or strategic decisions that shape the outcome. Dillow’s writing favors clarity and table‑readiness: maps, encounter notes, and scenario hooks are laid out so a GM can run the material with minimal prep. The book also expands the High Fantasy setting with new lore, creatures, and magical elements that can be reused beyond the included adventures. Exploration‑driven fantasy with a focus on discovery. Player‑driven problem solving, often with multiple viable paths. Low‑to‑mid‑level challenges, accessible to a wide range of parties. Classic early‑RPG structure, emphasizing modularity and improvisation. The book represents the transitional moment in early tabletop design—moving from pure dungeon crawls toward more narrative‑aware scenarios. It also reflects the distinctive flavor of the High Fantasy system, which blended traditional fantasy adventure with a more literary, myth‑inflected tone.
