Uncommon FIRST EDITION of a delightful 1940s Australian children's book with charming illustrations & colour plates. Written & illustrated by D.H. Gilmore. Includes colour frontispiece, plus all 5 additional colour plates, as issued. Also with several smaller b&w illustrations throughout (some full page). HARDCOVER with DUSTJACKET. Dustjacket with wraparound artwork, also by D.H. Gilmore. From inner front flap of dustjacket: "Catkin and Codlin are two little Silkworms with very good intentions. They set out for the Market Town to sell the fine silken thread spun by Mrs Silkworm. They have many adventures on the way but quite the most breath-taking is when they are immured in the deepest, darkest dungeon in Baron Bumblebee's Baronial Hall. This is a delightful story for the very young who will be able to recognize the characters from the book in the little creatures that they see for themselves in bush and garden; spider, bumblebees and cicadas. Catkin and Codlin leads the imagination of the child into that charming world where fantasy and reality go hand in hand". First edition, with "1946" to both title page & copyright page with no later reprint dates. Uncommon title, with Trove showing only 8 copies held in libraries in Australia. Printed in Australia by Halstead Press, Sydney. Bound in original creme paper boards with bright red lettering & design to both boards & spine, in publisher's unclipped pictorial dustjacket. The dustjacket is now protected in a removable clear mylar cover. Slight handling wear, mild foxing, small closed tear to one page, small abrasions to front panel of dustjacket, some old tape repairs to dustjacket (mostly inside), blind-impression of former owner's name (erased) to ffep, otherwise despite the minor faults still a nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. 53pp. Scarce title. RARE. SB-13.…
