Xxvi, 216 pp., frontispiece, facsimile of five editions of the Adelie Blizzard newspaper, some leaves interspersed between editions unpaginated. Illustrated with some colour images of paintings, drawings and maps; some black-and-white photographs and diagrams included. A fine copy. First edition. A beautiful facsimile of the five editions of Sir Douglas Mawson's newspaper, the Adelie Blizzard. Written by Mawson and his colleagues in 1913, the newspaper was a valuable creative outlet for the men who had withstood much hardship in the prior year. The facsimiles show the corrections and edits made by Mawson and his team, hand-written headings and information gleaned from wireless communication with Australia. This handsome volume includes a preface by Emma McEwin, Mawson's great-granddaughter, as well as an introduction by Dr Elizabeth Leane, Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Tasmania and Mark Pharaoh, Senior Collection Manager at the South Australian Museum. Also included are brief biographies of the expedition's members, and full-page reproductions of some of the artworks and photographs by the expedition's artists Joseph van Waterschoot van der Gracht, Charles Harrison and Frank Hurley. Gilt-lettered and silver-decorated half calf and gilt-pictorial blue cloth; top edge a trifle marked; a near-fine copy. Number 174 of only 199 copies of the deluxe issue (in a total edition of 999 copies: 450 copies in cloth, 300 in card covers and 50 sets of unbound sheets). One copy only of each of the five issues of 'The Adelie Blizzard' was produced during Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914, in April, May, June, August and October 1913. The original - and hitherto unpublished - typescript is reproduced here, complete with numerous contemporary editorial annotations.
