Item description from seller

Octavo. xv, [1], 654 pages. Hardcover bound in early green full leather. The binding is worn, and the headcap of the spine is pulled and torn, with a 1 3/4 inch split on the front hinge and a 1 1/4 in split on the rear hinge. The binding is rubbed and scuffed but generally sound. An ex-library copy from the Library of Congress with full markings. All edges gilt. The title page and following page (first 2 pages of the Table of Contents) is detached as a section but laid in loosely. The text is a little toned but is sound. James Buchanan Eads (1820-1887) was an American engineer best known for his triple arch steel bridge over the Mississippi River at St. Louis (constructed in 1874). He was also an inventor who held several patents. He attained recognition and fortune for designing diving and shipwreck retrieval methods along the Mississippi, often doing the most dangerous work himself. During the Civil War he helped construct Ironclad ships for use on the Mississippi. He oversaw the construction of 7 ironclads in 5 months. Scarce.

Store description

Pages Past is a small used and antiquarian bookshop holding 10,000-15,000 volumes. We are located a few blocks from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Most of our books are hardback, although we have a few bookcases of paperbacks with recent fiction and classic literature represented. We also have a fairly good collection of Eastern Philosophy & Religion (Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism) as well as New Age. Most of these are recent paperbacks in nice condition. We have a good collection of antiquarian books in the fields of Americana, old leather bound books, and early religious and scholarly books. Shop hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. We're closed on Sundays. We are always interested in buying quality books in very good condition.
