Elaborately gilt-decorated spines, green leather title labels and gilt volume numbering. Condition: Very Good Plus (VG+). Complete three-volume set. Description A particularly handsome and exceptionally well-preserved complete three-volume first edition of Adam Bede, George Eliot's celebrated first full-length novel, published by William Blackwood and Sons in 1859. First published in February 1859, Adam Bede established George Eliot, the literary pseudonym of Mary Ann Evans (1819–1880), as one of the foremost English novelists of the Victorian period. The novel was immediately acclaimed for its psychological insight, moral complexity and remarkably sympathetic portrayal of rural English society. The novel remains one of the most significant achievements of nineteenth-century English realism and an important landmark in the development of the Victorian novel. This complete three-volume set is especially distinguished by its exceptionally attractive contemporary bindings. The volumes are uniformly bound in burgundy half leather over richly patterned marbled boards, with corresponding marbled page edges. Their spines are extensively decorated with elaborate gilt floral and ornamental tooling, complemented by contrasting green leather title labels and gilt volume numbering. The combination of burgundy leather, richly coloured marbling and beautifully preserved gilt decoration gives the set a particularly elegant appearance. Condition Very Good Plus (VG+) – Complete Three-Volume Set An exceptionally attractive and well-preserved set, displaying the craftsmanship and character of fine nineteenth-century bookbinding. All three volumes retain their handsome contemporary half-leather bindings, with rich burgundy leather spines and corners, decorative marbled boards and matching marbled text-block edges. The bindings are exceptionally tight and firm, with all boards securely attached and the board hinges in immaculate condition. There is no evidence of weakness or splitting to the hinges. The spines are particularly impressive, retaining their elaborate gilt decoration in excellent condition. The gilt tooling remains bright, crisp and highly attractive, while the contrasting green leather title labels are intact and clearly legible. The marbled boards retain their striking original colours and intricate patterns. There is some rubbing, surface wear and localised loss to the marbled paper, consistent with the age of the volumes, but these do not detract significantly from the overall attractive appearance of the set. The matching marbled text-block edges are well preserved and retain their distinctive decorative pattern. Internally, the examined pages are clean and well preserved, with occasional scattered foxing and light age-related spotting, particularly to the preliminary leaves and title pages. All three volumes present beautifully as a matching set, with their tight bindings, immaculate hinges and excellent gilt spines being particularly noteworthy. These pagination figures correspond to the recorded collation of the first edition of Adam Bede, as identified in specialist bibliographical references, including Baker and Ross, A4.1.…
