Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was a prominent Philadelphia physician who served as Surgeon General of the Continental Army, and later a professor of chemistry and medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Rush?s study of the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia in August and September 1793. Rush describes the symptoms those infected and records his personal observations. He recommends blood-letting and other ineffective measures as treatment. He did comment on the prevalence of mosquitoes in Philadelphia that summer but believed the cause of the fever to be a cargo of rotting coffee beans. The true source of the Yellow Fever, a mosquito-borne bacteria, was not discovered until 1900 by Walter Reed. Rush, Benjamin.
