Quarto, unpaginated (36pp.), illustrated. Printed and bound for use in a high-level conference or presentation, likely by a Kinko's or a boutique operation. Casebound in black leather, stamped in silver with the design from a Gehry drawing. Near fine, with some mild rubbing to the extremities, but sound and clean. An unrecorded prospectus, rather light on facts and figures, but heavy on architectural ideas, visualizations, and models, laying ideas and preinciples behind the "work in progress" (so stated on the leaf after the title page) which would eventually become the Peter B. Lewis Building, housing the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University; evnetually completed in 2002. A significant document in the early history of this remarkable building, which manages to stand out in Cleveland's University Circle neighborhood, even within just a block or two of the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Western Reserve Historical Society, all of which have historically beautiful structures. A lengthy quotation from then-dean of the Weatherhead School, Scott R. Cowen, opens the book with a "Mission Statement," which begins: "The Peter B. Lewis Campus is more than a collection of buildings and spaces. it is a concept that will 'come alive' -- symbolically as well as substantively -- through the creation of a physical campus and by which the Weatherhead School of Management wil be transformed into a Creative Learning Organization." What follows is a series of illustrations in several formats; many in black and white, and many in color. Some of these are from abstract line drawings in Gehry's hand, often with a date (usually 1997); others are color photographs of three-dimensional models in wood, metal, and sometimes paper, which are extremely evocative of Gehry's whimsical style, often pairing starkly simple rectangular structures with almost shapeless forms. A few more quotations from Cowen, and a small photographic illustration of Gehry holding open a blueprint and looking out at the Case Western campus are also present. While there is little text here, the prospectus is clearly designed to excite the reader about the possible final form that the building will take; a serious departure from the staid, neoclassical style prevalent in the neighborhood, and also from some of the existing brutalist buildings on the Case Western campus. This volume is not separately listed in OCLC, and while we presume a few copies may be languishing in offices and libraries in the Cleveland area--and a reference copy probably in the Gehry and Associates offices--the prospectus is certanily scarce. A beautiful image-driven work, representative of the "idea" stage of a major artistic construction project.
