190 x 150 mm. (7 1/2 x 6"). 6 p.l., 496 pp. Contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked (preserving original spine), raised bands, upper cover with round (library?) sticker labelled "72," all edges speckled red. Historiated headpieces and foliated initials. First page of text with early ownership signature of James Rudyerd; verso of rear endpaper with signature of Ed[ward] Shallcross. STC 19488; ESTC S114202. Back cover somewhat abraded, one lower corner rather damaged, binder's glue from turn-ins offset onto title and final leaf, but the rest of the contents extremely clean, fresh, and bright, with only negligible imperfections. AN EXTREMELY APPEALING COPY. Though postures of receiving Holy Communion may not seem to be an issue of great concern to us today, in the Anglican church of 1629 it was nothing short of an incendiary controversy. In fact, our author states in his preface here that the debate over kneeling for reception "hath kindled such combustion amongst men, as God onely knowes how it is possible to be quenched." Nonetheless, in the present work, the obscure Thomas Paybody, in what is apparently his only book, takes on the task of defending the custom against those who protest that it constitutes an act of idolatry, that it runs counter to the spirit of Christian liberty, and/or that it does not reflect what the seated apostles were doing at the Last Supper. He was writing during the first stirrings of the Great Rebellion, when the Puritans were eager to simplify church ritual and church hierarchy, and were not inclined to kneel before either bishop or king. Clearly a defender of High Church Anglicanism, Paybody argues that kneeling is nowhere prohibited in Scripture and that it is an appropriate gesture to honor the bread and wine which embody Christ's sacrifice. The book is quite rare: no other copy is presently on the market, and no copies seem to have appeared at auction since 1977. One possible explanation is that this is the kind of book that would likely have been cheaply made and not held up well; our copy, on the contrary, has a sturdy (if quite simple) binding, and the text is exceptionally well preserved.
