Wheatley traces the history of the anagram from antiquity through the nineteenth century, preceded by an extensive survey of other verbal and typographical curiosities including macaronic poetry, punning mottoes, echo and shaped verse, alliteration, acrostics, lipograms, chronograms, logograms, palindromes, and bouts-rimés. The volume concludes with appendices and a substantial bibliography of works relating to anagrams. Printed for the author by Stephen Austin of Hertford. Small 8vo. vi, [2], 186pp. Title page printed in red and black. Contemporary three-quarter dark green morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt with raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers.
