Originally established in 1820 by Dr. Nathaniel Chapman as the Philadelphia Journal of the Medical and Physical Sciences, physician Isaac Hays assumed leadership of the editorial board in 1827 and renamed it to The American Journal of the Medical Sciences. This first volume reflects his desire to expand the journal from a regional organ focused on Philadelphia to the premier national flagship journal for American medicine, providing a unified forum for medical research across the United States. 1415657.
