The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute is the principal Department of Defense laboratory for the study of the biological effects of ionizing radiation. Among the topics covered in this introductory booklet are: Performance Management, Casualty Management, Gene Modulation, Radiation Hazards Analysis, Technology Transfer, Medical Education, Emergency Response, Operational Dosimetry, Radiation Sources, Laboratory Animals, and Safety and Health. The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) was established in 1960 as a joint agency of the Army, Navy and Air Force. It is now part of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, a joint Department of Defense agency. The unique resources of AFRRI enable advancements in the protection of soldiers and citizens. Its mission is to preserve the health and performance of U.S. military personnel and to protect humankind through research that advances understanding of the effects of ionizing radiation. To these ends, the institute collaborates with other government facilities, academic institutions, and civilian laboratories in the United States and other countries to research the biological effects of ionizing radiation. In addition, it provides medical training and emergency response to manage incidents related to radiation exposure.
