Item description from seller

Octavo; 400 pages, dark blue cloth, gilt-stamped spines; inked name Volume 13 in the Library of Christian Classics. Here are new translations of some of the basic Christian writings of the first two centuries of Christianity. "In modern times, with the increasing inability even of those trained in universities and theolgical colleges to read Latin and Greek texts with ease and famiiliarity, the translation of selected portions of earlier Christian literature into modern languages has become more necessary than ever before. . The efforts that have been made to meet this need are too numerous to be noted here, but none of these collections serves the purpose of the reader who desires a library of representative treatises spanning the Christian centuries as a whole. . Notes have been supplied where these were needed to explain the author's meaning." - General Preface.

Store description

Joyce And Company, established 1975, works out of an office near Chicago's Loop. There are usually 15-20,000 books on-site and available for browsing. Mr. Joyce was a founding partner of the former Chicago Rare Book Center, of Chicago and Evanston, Illinois. Proprietor Tom Joyce appeared regularly as the book appraiser on "The Appraisal Fair", seen on Home And Garden Television, HGTV. We still do appraisals on a wide variety of subjects, from literature to history, fine books, children's, presses, theology, law, medicine, maps, autographs. These topics are reflected in our inventory, and much more, including Sherlockiana. In addition to regional institutions nearby Chicago and Illinois, we have been able to place rare materials with the American Antiquarian Society, The Library of Congress, The Bodleian Library, Harvard and Yale Universities, the Presidential Libraries of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, et cetera. …
