No inscriptions. Binding tight. Light off-setting to endpapers. ***In a very good dustwrapper, very slightly rubbed, worn, creased with short closed tears to edges. Cover bright, no chips. 222 mm x 144 mm. 638 printed pages. ***'This novel deals with matters which preoccupied the great classical writers - power and ambition in high places, nobility and evil, actions that affect the destinies of nations. The stature of the characters corresponds to the scale on which a novel of this sort has necessarily to be conceived. The issue of power is whether the President of the United States can obtain, as the Constitution requires, the Senate's confirmation of the man he has appointed to his new Secretary of State. Evidence is offered which casts doubt on the nominee's loyalty.' (Quote taken from jacket blurb). *** 'A tale of intrigue in high places where men are pitted against each other over momentous matters of state, unleashing the passions of love, ambition and revenge.' [Wall Street Journal - quote taken from back of jacket blurb] ***A novel of Washington politics and winner of the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
