About this Item
Seminal textbook on probability theory by Croatian-American mathematician and probabilist William Feller (1906-1970), written while he was teaching at Cornell and published shortly after his appointment to the faculty at Princeton in 1950. A National Medal of Science recipient in 1969, Feller made fundamental contributions to numerous topics relating to probability theory, including renewal theory, Tauberian theorems, random walks, diffusion processes, and the law of the iterated logarithm. At the time of its publication the Introduction was called "one of the great events in mathematics this century" and "the most successful treatise on probability ever written." A second, independent volume was published in 1968. Hardcover with dust jacket, 8vo, 419 pages. Slight lean to spine. Mild rubbing to extremities. Some glue burn to end papers. Virtually intact dust jacket, save for light chipping at corners and spine; sizable closed tears along the spine, though it remains visually seamless. Some rubbing and soiling to dj, with light creasing to top edge; toning to spine. With a review slip laid in dated 6/12/50 with a publication date of 6/9/50. Not marked, but from the library of science journalist and editor George Boehm. A significant treatise, scarce thus. Seller Inventory # ABE-1651429305760
