Relativity for the Million. By Martin Gardner. Illustrated by Anthony Ravielli. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1962. First Edition, Second Printing. Original Dust jacket, 182 p, 9.5 x 6 , 8vo. In good condition. Dust jacket: normally scuffed at edges and corners; rear flap s hinge soiled; normal toning. Grey cloth boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners with general age-staining on binding. Top edge of text-block stained red. Text-block very light toned in margins, but otherwise clean & illustrations bright. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. Martin Gardner (1914 2010) was an American popular mathematics and popular science writer with interests also encompassing magic, scientific skepticism, micro-magic, philosophy, religion, and literature especially the writings of Lewis Carroll, L. Frank Baum, and G. K. Chesterton. He was a leading authority on Lewis Carroll; The Annotated Alice, which incorporated the text of Carroll's two Alice books, was his most successful work and sold over a million copies. Anthony Ravielli (1916-1997) was an artist for books, magazines, and advertising. The vast majority of it is drawn in an engraving style that appears to be done on scratchboard. He worked for many years with Sports Illustrated, drawing how-to illustrations for a range of activities, such as golf, baseball, and fishing. Many of these were later collected into books.
