In an autograph letter signed by Miss Harriet T. Righter, the Chairman of the Friends, dated Oct. 31, 1941 to Executive Board member Miss Jessie Wells Post, Miss Righter explains ".When our bookplate was finished, I asked the artist, Mr. Ernest Roth, to give us some signed copies for members of our Executive Board.We had them mounted, and I am enclosing your copy with this.Sincerely yours, Harriet T. Righter" Letter approx. 8 1/2" x 11" size, written on the Friends letterhead. Light wear, old fold lines; in very good condition. The etching is approx. 3 1/2" x 4 5/8" signed and dated in pencil below the plate, Ernest D. Roth 1941 & signed in the plate E.D. Roth. The art was printed on a larger sheet, 7 5/8" x 9" approx. hinged at the top edge to a folding matte-surround, 9 1/2" x 12" overall; light wear; in very good condition. Ernest David Roth (1879 - 1964) artist whose "…etchings display the full resources of a complex medium, revealing Roth as a meticulous craftsman.In addition to his artistic work, Roth participated fully in the community of American printmakers. He was a founder of the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, a charter member of the Painter-Gravers of America, and a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Watercolor Society, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Print Makers Society of California, and the National Arts Club.Roth's contribution to American art lies in his lifelong devotion to perfection in that part he made his own." (Elton W. Hall in the ANB) Brooklyn resident and businesswoman Harriet T. Righter (1878 - 1982), was the president of Selchow and Righter the game maker.
