Boston: Lee and Shepard Publishers, 1894. First Edition. 211 p, original tan cloth binding measures 10.75 x 7.5 , large 8vo. In fair condition. Boards are normally scuffed at edges and corners. Head and tail of spine bumped with frayed cloth at head. Gilt lettering dulled, but legible. All edges of text-block gilt. Ownership bookplate on front paste-down: Maurice Robert des Marais . Ownership signatures on front fly-leaf: Rena L. Hamilton. Burritt Hamilton. Blind stamp on front fly-leaf: The Lilacs Hamilton . Light toning throughout text-block, mostly in margins. Rear gutter cracked with exposed binding mesh. Binding intact. Please see photos. Samuel Adams Drake (1833 1905) was an American journalist and writer. He went to Kansas in 1858 as telegraphic agent of the New York Associated Press, became the regular correspondent of the St. Louis Republican and the Louisville Journal, and for a while edited the Leavenworth Times. In 1861 he joined the state militia and served throughout the American Civil War, becoming brigadier general of militia in 1863. In 1864, he was colonel of the 17th Kansas Volunteers, commanding the post of Paola, Kansas, during Price's invasion of Missouri in that year. He returned to Boston in 1871 and resumed literary work.
