Within the Capes. By Howard Pyle. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1885. First Edition. 266 p + 10 publisher's adverts. Original decorated brown binding measures 7.25 x 4.75"; Custom slip case measures 7.75 x 5.5", 8vo. In very good condition. Custom slip-case clean; leather title label on spine normally scuffed; gilt lettering bright and clean. Custom folding mat exhibits binder's permanent ink stamp on top edge: "Bound by Jas. MacDonald Co., N.Y.". Original binding clean; boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine bumped. Old-hand ownership signature, in ink, found on front fly-leaf. Text-block very clean with minimal toning in margins. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Howard Pyle (1853 – 1911) was an American illustrator, painter, and author, primarily of books for young people. He was a native of Wilmington, Delaware, and he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. Within the Capes by Pyle's first novel written in the late 19th century. It follows Captain Tom Granger, who recounts the extraordinary events of his life, particularly his adventures during the early 19th century as he navigates personal and external conflicts, including love, family, and maritime warfare.
