The History of Cornwall, From the Earliest Records and Traditions, to the Present Time. Compiled by Fortescue Hitchins, Esq., and Edited by Mr. Samuel Drew of St. Austell. Helston: Printed and Published by William Penaluna; And Sold by Edwards, 53, Newgate-Street, London. 1824. Vol. I: 729 p + 5 plates (including frontis); Vol. II: 710 p + 6 plates (including frontis) ONE PLATE LACKING: View of Penrice to face page 59 in Vol. II. Contemporary uniform half leather cloth binding measuring 11.5 x 9.5 , 4tos. In fair condition. Boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at leather corners. All edges of text-blocks are marbled (top and fore-edges lightly dulled). Vol. I s front hinge is split while rear hinge is split at head only. Vol. II s front hinge split at head & rear hinge split at tail. All boards remain intact, but hinges are fragile. Gilt lettering on spines overall bright and clean. Previous ownership signed bookplate found on Vol. I s marbled front paste-down: James Gattey (Galtey?). Some pencil marginalia found on modern front end-pages (verso). Age-stain found on top corner of Vol. I s title page. Foxing around plates in both volumes. Finger-soiling found on fore-edges throughout text-blocks. Normal toning exhibited; mostly at edges of leaves. ONE PLATE LACKING IN VOL. II. Bindings are intact, but hinges remain fragile. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Fortescue Hitchins (1784 - 1814) He attended Truro Grammar School left and completed an articled clerkship with Robert Bone at Plymouth Doc 1800-95 he then moved to London and eventually moved back to Cornwall where he established a practice at St Ives. He was a published poet and historian. There are also references to his father Malachy Hitchins in the letters of Charlotte Champion Pascoe published as "Walks in St Hilary" she was the wife of Thomas Pascoe who was the next vicar of St Hilary. Fortescue was Baptized at Saint Hilary 22nd of February 1784. He was the son of Malachy Hitchins and Joanna Hawkins. Samuel Drew (1765 1833) was a British Methodist theologian. A native of Cornwall, England, he was nicknamed the "Cornish metaphysician" for his works on the human soul, the nature of God, and the deity of Christ. He also wrote on historical and biographical themes. In 1814 he completed a history of Cornwall begun by Fortescue Hitchins. Complete set in two volumes. ONE PLATE MISSING IN VOLUME II.
