An expanded book-length anthology that places the legacy of slavery at the center of the American narrative. It argues that 1619, the year the first enslaved Africans arrived in Virginia, is a crucial starting point for understanding the nation's history, and that the consequences of slavery continue to shape modern American life, from politics to capitalism. The book features essays, poems, and fiction to explore how this legacy impacts everything from the healthcare system to the justice system.
