A smart sixteen-volume set from the celebrated Highways & Byways series (1897 1926), all first editions save one 1923 reprint, richly illustrated throughout with frontispieces, in-text drawings, and fold-out maps. In the publisher's original green and blue cloth bindings, with the exception of "Cornwall & Devon", "Berkshire," "Sussex," and "London", which have been re-backed, with original binding affixed to darker green backing cloth.These volumes are first editions, with the exception of one copy, Highways and byways in Cambridge and Ely by Rev. Edwards Conybeare, which is a 1923 reprint.The 'Highways & Byways' series was a set of thirty-six regional topographical guides published between 1898 and 1948. They were hugely popular, and were printed in numerous editions. Each guide gave a thorough overview of a specific area in England, detailing the history, landmarks, flora and fauna, folklore and more.These volumes are each illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece illustration, with numerous in-text vignettes and illustrations, many of which are full page.
