The novel tells the story of Agnese, a young woman suffering from a severe depressive disorder that began in adolescence. Marked by emotional fragility, a sense of emptiness, and a constant tendency toward self-erasure, Agnese is vulnerable and highly susceptible to others’ judgments and desires. She experiences relationships as the only anchor that gives meaning to her existence. Gradually, her psychotic depressive episodes evolve into a schizophrenic syndrome in which Agnese feels possessed by an inner demon. Matilde, her childhood friend, tries to protect her and save her from her psychotic obsession.
Rachele enters Agnese’s life—a charismatic, dominant, and deeply bipolar woman who carries a traumatic past marked by emotional losses and sexual violence, an event that has irreversibly shaped her psyche, transforming pain into rage, cynicism, and a need for control. Unable to process her trauma, Rachele channels her violence onto her victims, using sex and psychological manipulation as instruments of domination.
In Rachele’s life there is Valeria, a friend since high school who reveals her attraction and long-hidden love for her. Valeria loves and justifies Rachele, despite sensing her dangerous nature. At the same time, Rachele maintains relationships based on submission and humiliation with a man—her rapist—overwhelmed by shame and remorse for the violence he committed.
Agnese enters Rachele’s life and becomes her primary victim.
The relationship between Rachele and Agnese develops as a toxic and destructive bond: Rachele exerts increasingly violent psychological and sexual control, alternating apparent passion with brutality, while Agnese, due to her psychiatric condition, progressively slips into total dependence, losing her identity and will.
Parallel to this, Rachele’s desire for revenge emerges. She carries out a cold and calculated act of vengeance, reversing the roles of victim and perpetrator, marking a point of no return: the violence she suffered is not overcome but replicated and transformed into a tool of personal assertion.
The Devil Within is a dark and disturbing novel that explores the most shadowed zones of desire, power, and emotional dependency. A story that shocks because it rejects any form of moral mediation and portrays extreme relationships where the boundary between love and domination dissolves. The narrative is raw, essential, at times brutal. Violence is never indulgent but constant, insinuating, inevitable.
