3 pamphlets bound together, each with separate pagination and register. 8vo. (first two titles in fours) 8.25 x 5.5 inches. Third pamphlet lacks O1 signature, p.171-72, but this is included in facsimile. Some half-titles and advertisements have been omitted by the binder. Bound in original half-calf, over marbled boards; spine in compartments with gilt bands, with contrasting maroon title label, gilt (Pamphlets). Extremities worn and a little foxing at the beginning of first pamphlet and some margin stains on the third, which has edge loss on the last page, just touching the the text. Top edge of second pamphlet has removed inscription and one correction in text and lower margin manuscript phrase (p.91) in the third ; otherwise a generally clean and crisp interior. Printed label of Thomas Hammond Foxcroft, with crest above and his signature on title page of first title. Manuscript list of the the three pamphlets also on front pastedown. Contents: 1. Thomas Erskine (1750-1823), was a Scottish Whig lawyer and politician who defended the radicals prosecuted by the government in the 1790s. This text is part of an extensive pamphlet war on the French Revolution and subsequent execution of Louis XIV and war with France. Here he is attacking the views of Edmund Burke (1729-97), who had started the controversy with his Reflections on the Revolution in France in 1790, as expressed in his Letters on the Prospect of a Regicide Peace (1796). The Present War with France was a bestseller and thirty five editions were published in 1797. As first baron, Erskine served in the office of Lord High Chancellor, 1806-07. The Short Review was published anonymously, but is known to be the work of Sir Nathaniel William Wraxall (1751-1831), author and politician, who was created first baronet in 1813. After early employment by the East India Company, 1769-82, he returned home, travelled extensively in Europe and served as a Tory MP for three different constituencies, 1780-94, being later chiefly known for his published European memoirs. This pamphlet is a dispassionate review of the state of Britain in 1787 with some linked observations on other European states. The Jockey Club was also published anonymously, but is known to be the work of Charles Pigott (d.1794), satirist and radical. The work, using partly disguised names, satirises fashionable society and the conduct of life of the upper classes (the actual Jockey Club was founded in 1750). The first part was published in 1792 and there was also a third part and another work by Pigott, The Female Jockey Club (1794). Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Marrins Bookshop, Folkestone, Kent, United Kingdom, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.

Orders usually shipped within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If a book order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required.
