Jim Davis est un auteur am�ricain, principalement connu pour �tre le cr�ateur de la s�rie et du personnage Garfield, un chat peu commun, � la fois sarcastique, paresseux et gourmand. Le succ�s de Garfield, dessin� pour la premi�re fois en 1978, ne se d�ment pas, et la s�rie est encore publi�e partout dans le monde, forte de ses millions de lecteurs quotidiens. Une des premi�res questions que les fans? posent au cr�ateur de Garfield est : "Est-ce? que vous avez grandi entour� de chats ?" La r�ponse est "Oui... de vingt-cinq, pour �tre tout � fait pr�cis." Mais � la diff�rence de Garfield, dont le plat pr�f�r� est les lasagnes, Davis pr�tend que ses chats ont surv�cu avec un r�gime plus adapt� � leur esp�ce. Bien qu'il plaisante facilement � propos de Garfield, Davis �tait loin d'imaginer, il y a quinze ans, le succ�s ph�nom�nal que sa cr�ation rencontrerait. Aujourd'hui, "Garfield" para�t dans environ 2 300 journaux. ? N� le 28 juillet 1945 � Marion, Indiana, Jim Davis grandit dans une petite ferme avec son p�re, Jim senior, son fr�re, Dave, et leurs 25 chats, lesquels comptaient beaucoup sur l'hospitalit� de sa m�re, Betty. Contraint par des crises d'asthme � rester �? l'int�rieur de la maison, le jeune Davis passe des heures avec un crayon, du papier et son imagination. Il s'aper�oit rapidement que ses dessins sont plus amusants lorsqu'il les accompagne d'un texte. Davis rencontre son �pouse, Carolyn, � l'universit� de Ball State. Il est si pr�occup� par le dessin et les gags qu'il imagine, qu'il termine ses �tudes avec "les pires r�sultats jamais enregistr�s � ?l'universit� de Ball State". Malgr� cela, l'American Association of State Colleges and Universities (l'Association am�ricaine des coll�ges et des universit�s d'�tat) lui d�cerne, en 1985, le Distinguished Alumnus ?Award, pour son obstination � poursuivre des �tudes sup�rieures. Ses �tudes termin�es, Davis travaille pendant deux ans dans une agence publicitaire. En 1969, il devient l'assistant du cr�ateur des "Tumbleweeds", Jim Ryan. Puis il cr�e une BD autour d'un personnage �minemment cynique, un moucheron d�nomm� "Gnorm the Gnat". Le strip est publi� dans un journal local, mais lorsque Davis essaye de le vendre � un syndicat national, on lui r�torque que les insectes n'amusent personne. Cinq ans plus tard, Davis dessine dans son dernier strip un pied g�ant qui tombe du ciel, �crasant Gnorm. Davis constate alors qu'il existe de nombreux strips mettant en sc�ne des chiens, alors que ceux avec des chats sont plut�t rares, malgr� le nombre de personnes qui en poss�dent. C'est ainsi qu'en 1978 il cr�e "Garfield" (au h�ros �ponyme), s�rie accueillie par la maison d'�dition United Feature Syndicate. Sa premi�re publication a lieu le 19 juin 1978 simultan�ment dans plus d'une quarantaine de journaux. En 1995, "Garfield" change de maison d'�dition et s'installe chez Universal Press Syndicate. � propos de sa s�rie, Jim Davis pr�cise qu'il s'agit "d'un strip, con�u uniquement pour distraire, qui repose sur la forte personnalit� d'un chat, gros, paresseux et cynique, et qui �vite tout commentaire social ou politique". En 1981, Davis fonde la soci�t� Paws. Inc., un studio destin� � produire et � maintenir la qualit� artistique de son oeuvre ainsi que de ses produits d�riv�s. Ainsi, Garfield appara�t aujourd'hui sur plus de 6 000 produits vendus dans 69 pays. Des 25 albums publi�s par Ballantine? You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to The Librarian's Books, Cranford, New Jersey, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal

The right of withdrawal does not apply to:

The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
