Book Description Hodder and Stoughton. London. 1927 1st edition. 8vo (155 x 225mm). Ppxii,243. Woodcut illustrations by Robert Gibbings. Green cloth, upper board and spine titled in gilt. Gift inscription to front end-paper, Mudie's Library label (torn) to front paste-down. A good copy only, lacks dust-wrapper. Sir Edward Grey, Viscount Grey of Fallodon was the Foreign Secretary, before, during and after the First World War. He found time in this period to write Fly-Fishing, as well as the essays and speeches which were collected and published as The Fallodon Papers in 1926, and the private writings which appeared posthumously as The Cottage Book. "He was also a naturalist and writer of the first order. First published in 1927, The Charm of Birds was an immediate popular success. It deals mostly, but not exclusively, with birdsong, and is full of sensitive observation, beautifully written. Unlike most works of ornithology, it can be read for the pleasure of its prose alone. It is a volume to inspire all lovers of nature." (Extract from the blurb of the 2001 Weidenfeld and Nicolson edition). Like The Fallodon Papers, The Charm of Birds is illustrated with wood engravings by Robert Gibbings, a professional engraver who wrote numerous books of his own and was instrumental in sparking off the vogue for woodcut illustrations which accompanied his own career. .
