Item description from seller

London, The Linnean Society, 1887. Large 4to. 52 pp. [249-300]; 18 lithographed plates [37-56]. Original printed wrappers. = First paper on the peculiar botany of a mysterious tropical table mountain in Venezuela, featuring in popular culture stories from Conan Doyle's The Lost World to the animation feature film UP. The expedition was the first to reach the top of the mountain. Earlier collecting had only be done at much lower elevations. ".[I]ts 31-square-kilometre (12-square-mile) summit area is bounded on all sides by cliffs rising 400 metres (1,300 ft). The mountain also serves as the tripoint of Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil". (Wikipedia). Many species, and even some genera, are new. Provenance: inscribed on the front wrapper by the famous British entomologist John Obadiah Westwood (1805-1893). Some chipping to spine cover; short tear and fold in one leaf's outer margin (printer's error); otherwise an excellent, clean copy. Rare in this state.
