Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. This is the actual school book owned by Thomas Hughes who wrote the autobiographical work "Tom Brown's Schooldays" about his days at Rugby. The book is "Aristotles De Rhetorica" and was published in 1833, the same year that Thomas Hughes went to Rugby. At the top of the title page it is signed "Thos Hughes Rugby". What is more interesting is that this book contains interleaving blank pages for translation. The first few pages contain the diligent translation efforts of Hughes. However Hughes was no great scholar despite the personal tutoring he received on his Aristotle from Dr Arnold and subsequent pages contain the sketches & doodlings of Hughes. There are about thirty drawings all told in the book by Hughes. There are boxers, as one would expect, because in Tom Browns schooldays Hughes wrote about the current boxing matches and he became a good amateur boxer himself. There are carriage drivers, horses (reminiscent of the white Horse an influence on Hughes from his native Berkshire) and hunting. There are also characters including an in idle smoking youth, Flashman perhaps. Most interesting is a little doodle entitled "Donnington Priory", which is where in fact Thomas Hughes lived as a boy. One can imagine the homesick boy doodling in his schoolbook as Dr Arnold quoted at length on Aristotle's philosophy. To me this book represents a piece of the English Speaking worlds cultural history. It is Tom Brown's own book. It is our only insight into Hughes as a boy and a newly discovered glimpse into a lost world. It is Hughes as a boy who was to become an important populariser of the English public school and the English way of life. In his later life he became a socialist and founded his own town "Rugby" in the USA. Tom Brown's Schooldays is probably the most important & popular boys school story ever and this book represents the real Tom Brown. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. The student was N Casswell of 24 Thurlow Rd London NW3. But also mentioned is Edna Crampton Regent St. The notebook which is in pencil begins Matthew 6 The Lords Payer in an Octave. "The right approach to prayer is through Self-remembering". etc "Cosmoses" "Seven Cosmoses- corresponding very nearly to the ring of creation". Notes from a programme of teaching running fron September 1934 to February 1936. Who the Tutor was is unclear, perhaps Ouspensky, Gurdjieff or Orage, JG Bennett, Maurice Nicoll or perhaps Jane Heap, an American publisher who moved in 1935 to London to set up a new study group. Mention of a "Sub Group". Mention of Kundalini a imagination which is definately a Gurdjieffian concept. Lots of diagrams on Hydrogen, octaves etc which I have never seen before. Drawing of an Ennagram. Contains what is probably a unique document relating to Gurdjieff, much of which is probably unique & lost. This diary and other non related notebooks were in several boxes of gurdjieffian books purchased in a surrey auction house in the 1990's. According to Yale University T I Casswell wrote "Gurdjieff, Ouspensky and Nicoll - A Living Teaching?" but it appears not to have been published. Reference to Casswell is apparently to be found amongst Maurice Nicoll's papers held at Yale University Library. Maurice Nicoll formed a group in London in 1931 so this perhaps holds the key. Also included are a number of T I Casswell's accounts books covering 1920's to 1960's. Book.

Silver. Condition: Good. A silver metal wax seal bearing the coat of arms of the Byron family motto "Crede Byron". Two horses flank a shield with a coronet above. The seal now has a ring on top as presumably it was converted into a pendant. Lord Byron certainly used a similar seal e.g. "red wax seal impressed with Byron's coat of arms surmounted by a coronet; postmarked MayFair' and addressed to Miss E. Bridget Pigot./ Southwell/Notts'." However I haven't managed to find an image of a seal to compare them to see it is was Lord Byron's or an association item or a souvenir. Book.

Soft cover. Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. In chinese script "The Virtue of Ghosts and Gods" is a direct translation of a famous phrase from the Chinese classic text, the Doctrine of the Mean (????, Zhongyong). The original Chinese phrase is "?????,????" (Gui shén zhi wèi dé, qí shèng yi hu), which can be translated as, "The virtue of ghosts and gods, how mighty it is!". This phrase, attributed to Confucius (via his grandson Zisi, the compiler of the text), is used to illustrate the pervasive and subtle nature of Heaven's influence and moral order in the world. It emphasizes that while the actions of spiritual beings (ancestors and gods) may not be physically seen or heard, their effects are embodied in all things and are constantly present in the natural order and human experience. The text contrasts their invisible nature with their manifest influence as proof of a profound, all-encompassing virtue. Book.

A separate organization, the Crusade for Freedom, was formed in 1950 to promote the NCFE and to raise money for its activities. Radio Free Europe was one of the activities of the National Committee for a Free Europe. RFE initiated broadcasting on July 4, 1950, the first 30 minutes of news, information, and political analysis was sent to Czechoslovakia, to be followed later that year by programs to Romania, Hungary, Poland, and Bulgaria.
