There are many side effects that the artist cannot imagine. These may be ideas for new works" [1] The idea was that every issue of Drunken Bakers published to date (2005) was to be "p…erformed" in chronological order. The artist Steve Claydon performed one part, Leckey the other. A vocal booth was hired in London's Soho and the artists arrived with shopping bags of alcohol (I like to imagine this included out of conceptual consistency every drink referenced in the comic strip, which is comprehensive). The performance also included the process of character formation, the personality of each Baker emerging under the increasing influence of alcohol, like an old school notion of creativity, but also as part of "blindly" carrying out the idea. Mark striped the comic of printed dialogue and other details and then filmed the frames, adding fades and additional effects including all the Foley which had also been recorded in Soho. The work was shown at the Cabinet in 2005. There was an attempt to turn the space into a blank page, adding white-out vinyl to the windows and fitting a white cord carpet; the carpet was left to become increasingly soiled for the duration of the show. Leckey had never sought permission to use the Drunken Bakers comic strip, neither from Viz nor from the creators Barney Farmer and Lee Healey. I think the idea was that it would be shown once and once only and then withdrawn from circulation, basically hoping to get away with it. It also seemed part of the attitude of the work to simply keep going, regardless. A year or so later and having received invitations from other spaces it ended up being screened at a European institution whereupon Barney Farmer became aware of what was going on and a cease and desist letter appeared. A nervous meeting between Leckey, Barney Farmer and Lee Healey was arranged at Windmill Street, Leckey's Soho flat. They all watched the video. Through a combination of generosity, good humour and empathy Barney Farmer and Lee Healey were forgiving, indeed supportive. Farmer and Healey went on to compose an episode of the comic strip in which the Drunken Bakers go to Tate Britain and encounter representations of themselves in the video, adding further nausea, confusion & disorientation to their intoxicated state. The Museum Bärengasse, where the Kunsthalle Zürich has been temporarily located, is a highly unusual building for a contemporary art gallery: there is no stylistic cohesion, and the interior is a confusing labyrinth of tiny chambers with elaborate paneling, decorative stucco, and prominent ceramic stov…es. In this quasi-domestic setting, the exhibition "Town-Gown Conflict" brought together Lucy McKenzie, Verena Dengler, Lucile Desamory, Caitlin Keogh, Beca Lipscombe, pelican avenue, and Elizabeth Radcliffe to explore textiles by both artists and designers whose works of art and of so-called applied art raise issues relating to social formatting. For the purposes of the exhibition, textiles are defined as encompassing fashion—both industrial and produced by hand, and including display, distribution, and documentation—and the craft practices of tapestry weaving, embroidery, and printed textiles. "Town-Gown Conflict" also embraced the issue of textiles in relation to fine art, such as their incorporation as a component in an installation or as a direct inspiration for drawing and painting. This publication attempts to transform the exhibition into book form. It includes an essay by Lucy McKenzie in which she focuses on the distribution of the artworks throughout the building to create a pattern of juxtapositions, as well as texts on each of the participating artists by Constance Barrère Dangleterre, Catriona Duffy, Kris Krimpe, Lucy McEachan, Anne Pontegnie, Isabella Anna-Maria Ritter, Philipp Traun, and Peter York. The book contains numerous installation views and is published in the Kunsthalle Zürich series.

They are in many ways conspicuously all the same. Nine-by-eight-inch, staple bound, with white covers bearing the title of whatever project they encapsulate and typically featuring a die-cut hole as their cover design, which reveals an image beneath. The inside covers are printed with a repeating logo pattern, which also refers specifically to the hosting institution or to another aspect of the project. The internal structure, too, is consistent. The font used is Times Roman or more recently Bembo, and the content is organized into a title page, a list of acknowledgments often in reverse alphabetical order (Z-A), an introductory text, and one or more critical essays on your work accompanying reproductions of both past and current projects. At the end is a very short biography listing only the year or city of your birth (1945, Los Angeles or Hollywood) and where you are currently residing. Then, conspicuously, you never list your exhibition history, but instead offer a "Selected Bibliography" of articles and essays about your work. Seeing any one of these catalogs on its own, the design is innocuous enough that all these particularities recede beneath the informative capability of the catalog, but after twenty-plus years, this consistency is quite striking. Anyone even remotely familiar with your working methods can assume that this repetition of uniformity is anything but arbitrary. Jay Sanders.
