The Yellow Book series changed the course of the history of art/literary publications with its emphasis on excellence in literature and cutting-edge, fin-de-siecle art. Leading writers and artists contributed to this volume. Rare.

The eleventh volume of this iconic and short-lived quarterly, central to the Decadent and Aesthetic movements of the 1890s. Though Beardsley was no longer art editor by this issue, The Yellow Book continued to publish a wide range of progressive literary and visual work. An ex-library copy, with expected but relatively unobtrusive institutional indications. Cloth spine toned and darkened; moderate shelf soiling to boards. Binding sound. Light toning to page stock, as expected. Includes Beerbohm's "Happy Hypocrite along with original black-and-white drawings by Patten Wilson, whose symbolist and medieval-inflected illustrations mark a visual high point of The Yellow Book's later phase. Good only, but complete and entirely serviceable. A representative example of this important avant-garde publication from the late Victorian period.

Publisher's original decorative cloth, yellow buckram with black block print designs to front panels, early volumes after illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley when he was editor, spines are a little faded but not unduly so, boards still retaining their yellow brightness, and extremities still quite sharp, corners, heads & tails etc., the only exception probably being the first volume which is more worn than the others, a touch more shaken with a small split to head of the spine (easy repair), pages are generally clean and crisp throughout, illustrations with tissue guards present, and a number of leaves uncut, with the same bookseller's label to front paste-down of each volume (D. W. Edwards of Hull) demonstrating the set's originality; a wonderful run of this pioneering periodical of the nineties, with contributions from so many greats of fin-de-siecle writing, including a number of women like George Egerton and Ella D'Arcy. Beardsley edited for the first year until his sacking by John Lane, went to edit the rival Savoy and then vanished from public view in the wake of Oscar Wilde's trial. The fourth volume of this short-lived but revolutionary literary and artistic quarterly, a key publication of the Decadent and Aesthetic movements in fin-de-siècle Britain. Includes four drawings by Aubrey Beardsley, among them the striking double-page supplement "Frontispiece for Juvenal", printed on coated stock with tissue guard. Contributions from literary and artistic figures central to the Yellow Book circle. Cloth slightly shelf-cocked with minor rubbing and crimping at spine ends; light toning and a few small abrasions to cloth at board edges. The Yellow Book, published from 1894 to 1897 by Elkin Mathews and John Lane, later by John Lane alone, and edited by the American Henry Harland, was an important literary periodical that lent its name to the "Yellow" 1890s.
