Of this collection of ten stories - only two were written about the planet of Xiccarph : ` The Maze of Maal Dweb' and `The Flower-Women'. UNillustrated. Cond: Wraps-around cover art is mostly blue. Lettering is white . Artwork shows a (dry) Venus figure emerging from a pool. Volume is clean and crisp and bright. Only real flaw is a store stamp on the first page, No names, minimal wear, spine fine. Decidedly collectible ! ! QUote (p. 176)(Demon of the Flower) : " Prostrating himself again, Lunithi gave thanks to the Occlith: and, considering that he had learned all that was requisite, he did not avail himself of the opportunity to question further the strange entity of living stone. (Adult Fantasy) Series Mass Market PB The third (and seemingly most uncommon) of the four paperback collections of Smith's stories edited for Ballantine by Lin Carter, who describes them in his Introduction as "extraplanetary weird fantasies." Most were originally published in various pulp magazines in the early 1930s, and constituted, in Carter's words, "something quite new and different and exciting, something all his own." He lauds the tales for a prose style he calls "rich, bejeweled, exotic kind of writing [of] the sort we most often think of as being natural to the heroic fantasy tale of magic kingdoms and fabulous eras of the mysterious past.".
