Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book invites readers to explore the fascinating discoveries of X-ray analysis as it relates to crystal structures. Born of a breakthrough presented in 1912 by Dr. Laue, this book details how scientists have utilized a crystal as a space grating for X-rays, opening up a whole new field of research. By analyzing the resulting patterns, scientists can determine the arrangement of atoms within a crystal, and in so doing, understand the very architecture of these materials. This led to remarkable conclusions about the atoms that emit X-rays under specific stimuli, shedding new light on problems of atomic structure. The discovery of two series of radiations, one from each of the K and L series, showed that within any one series, the penetrating power of a characteristic radiation increased steadily with the weight of the atom which produces it. With insights into crystal symmetry, the relation to the arrangement of atoms, and the intensity of X-ray reflection, this book serves as a valuable introduction to the field, demonstrating how it has deepened human understanding of the very essence of matter itself. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Original blue cloth. 8vo. vii, [1], 228 pp., [2 index], [2 ads]. Spine rubbed and slightly cocked, bookplate, else Very Good. The Braggs revolutionized the science of crystallography. One of the most fruitful sequels of this work was Moseley's reconstruction of the Periodic Table. The discovery of the chemical basis of life--DNA--by Perutz and others is yet another of the important sequels to the Bragg experiments. The Braggs were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915. (Printing and the Mind of Man No. 406.) Ink inscription: "E. V. Appleton St. John's College Cambridge." This is the signature of Edward Victor Appleton, who did postgraduate work in crystallography under William Henry Bragg at St. John's College in Cambridge. Appleton himself won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1947 for his investigation of the physics of the upper atmosphere. Stamped on both covers and the spine are gilt emblems (Appletons?). Certainly one of the most desirable copies of this notable book. Signed by Nobel prizewinner.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. SEMINAL TEXT ON NOBEL PRIZE SCIENCE IN X-RAY CRYSTALLOGRAPHY. The 1915 book X-Rays and Crystal Structure by Sir William Henry Bragg and Sir William Lawrence Bragg is a seminal text in the field of crystallography, written during a transformative period in the study of atomic and molecular structures. This work not only details the revolutionary techniques developed by the Braggs but also serves as an accessible introduction to the principles and applications of X-ray diffraction. The book presents the method of X-ray diffraction, which the Braggs pioneered. This technique allowed scientists to determine the arrangement of atoms in crystals, marking the beginning of modern structural analysis in chemistry, physics, and biology. The Bragg equation which relates the wavelength of X-rays to the diffraction angle and the spacing of atomic planes in a crystal, is a central feature of the text. The Braggs combine theoretical principles with experimental techniques, illustrating the power of X-ray diffraction to reveal atomic structures. They explain how X-rays interact with crystal lattices to produce diffraction patterns, which can be mathematically analyzed to deduce the arrangement of atoms. In 1915, the same year the book was published, the Braggs jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their contributions to X-ray crystallography. William Lawrence Bragg remains the youngest-ever Nobel laureate, recognized at the age of 25. Concentrating on the knowledge of atomic structure that x-ray provides, the Braggs virtually gave the science of crystallography a new basis, making way for Moseley's reconstruction of the period table and the discovery of DNA (see PMM). Their original short paper on the subject had been published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, Vol. 88, pp. 428-438, 1913. William H. Bragg (1862-1942) and William L. Bragg (1890-1971) were the leading researchers in the new field of x-ray structural analysis that Max von Laue (1879-1960), who also won the Nobel Prize in 1914, had established, and which had developed into an important branch of physics and chemistry. 8vo, First Edition, blank + 228 pp + 1 leaf adverts + 1 blank + 4 b&w photographic plates as called for boards rubbed, occasional spots but overall VG; Presentation copy dated Oct. 6, 1916 to Perry & Kay by Julius F. Stone (philanthropist and member Ohio State University Board of Trustees; he had purchased Gibralter Island and presented it as a gift to OSU; the Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory on Gilbralter named in honor of his father). This book was formerly the property of Arthur Greenberg, a leading figure in the history of chemistry.

Original publisher's blue cloth, gilt lettering on spine, faded, quarter-inch of cloth at foot of spine missing, joints loose, otherwise a good copy with "PRESENTATION COPY" blind-stamped onto title. X-RAY CRYSTALLOGRAPHY. First edition of the statement of Bragg's Law, by the father and son team who shared the 1915 Nobel Prize for physics "for their services in the analysis of crystal structure by means of x-rays." Concentrating on the knowledge of atomic structure that x-ray provides, the Braggs virtually gave the science of crystallography a new basis, making way for Moseley's reconstruction of the period table and the discovery of DNA (see PMM). "Von Laue had discovered the wave nature of x-rays. The problem was then taken up in several quarters. The Braggs used a method of electric registration, based upon the property of x-rays to make the air conducting. Thanks to the pioneer work of the Braggs, the structure of a large number of simple substances was elucidated, and a firm foundation was laid for future research, which soon resulted in detailed knowledge of the structure of solids" (Nobel, the Man & his Prizes, pp. 434-435).
