Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Inscribed and signed by Wouter Deruytter in blue ink on the title page. Great black and white photographs of rodeo cowboys. The book has sound hinges and does not lean. Pages are clean without creases, marks, stains or wrinkles. There are a few tiny dark spots in the gutter between spine and back cover, otherwise, the book's exterior is clean. Two cover corners are each just slightly blunted right at the tip. The book's dust jacket is clean and is not price-clipped. It has slight wear to edges but no holes, chips or tears. There is one shallow linear dent of about 1.5" in the back panel of the jacket. First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 148 pages. Published in 2000. The photographer's fourth collection. Wouter Deruytter's very first title to be published in the United States. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Second Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by James Crump and Elsa Kendall: Oversize-volume format. Brown cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Wouter Deruytter. Essay by John Wood. Printed on pristine-whtie, thick uncoated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Wouter Deruytter's "Cowboy Code". His homage to the American Cowboy. The great American writer Annie Proulx ("Brokeback Mountain") has convincingly suggested that the cowboy may have a steady girlfriend or full-fledged wife, but his deepest bonds are with other cowboys. "Well-known for his images of people in the masks and costumes of their identities, from the time-traveling duo McDermott & McGough to drag queens to circus performers, Deruytter has turned his attention to the American West. The rodeo cowboy is an omnipresent image in American culture, a modern-day folk hero and the subject of plays, movies, television, novels and all the other arts. But in these photographs from small, non-commercial rodeos, Deruytter brings to light a more homemade image than what we have become accustomed to. Deruytter's cowboys are not one-dimensional anachronisms: They tell a great mythic tale but they also suggest several historical parallels and force us to remember vanishing things we like to think of as permanent American values. They exude a sensuality and youthful elegance these cowboys may not be aware of" (John Wood). An absolute "must-have" title for Wouter Deruytter collectors. This copy is very boldly, elaborately, and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (in the year of publication) in blue ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "Wouter Deruytter NYC 2000". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and publication-year dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Precedes and should NOT be confused with the Second Edition. Copies available online have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 70 duotone plates. One of the most brilliant artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER WOUTER DERUYTTER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1892041340. Hardcover. Condition: Like New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Second Edition. Signed by photographer Wouter Deruytter on title page. Belgian photographer Wouter Deruytter is well-known for his images of people in the masks and costumes of their identity -- from the time-traveling duo McDermott & McGough, to drag queens, to circus performers, and on and on. Now Deruytter has turned his attention to the American West. For the past three summers he has been photographing cowboys and small town rodeos in Montana. The rodeo cowboy is an omnipresent image in American culture, a modern-day folk hero and the subject of plays, movies, television, novels, and all the other arts. But in these photographs from small, noncommercial rodeos, Deruytter reveals something we have not seen in most other depictions. Cowboy Code is a collection of probably his most joyous and inspiring images, a book of cowboy knights who have traded tournaments for rodeos, helmets for hats, and armor for leather.Deruytter's cowboys, however, are not one-dimensional anachronisms. They tell a great mythic tale, but they also suggest several historical parallels and force us to remember vanishing things we like to think of as permanent American values. They carefully document the small-town rodeo, and finally they exude a sensuality and youthful elegance these cowboys may not be aware of. When we look at Deruytter's cowboys and rodeos, we know we are witnessing rituals. These are eloquent and sensual images that bring to light another side of the cowboy myth in America. Wouter Deruytter was born in Roeselare, Belgium, on February 1, 1967. Having attended the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Ghent, Deruytter went on to study with Nan Goldin, Duane Michals, and Bruce Weber as an international scholarship student at New York's ICP. Since that time he has exhibited in such prestigious venues as Marlborough Gallery, Robert Miller Gallery, and the Fondation Cartier. His publications include Brussels (1990), McDermott & McGough: Anachronism Abroad (1994), and Wouter Deruytter: Knights of the Impossible (1997). Signed by Author.
