Putnam's Sons and Putnam's Magazine. He was an advocate of international copyright reform, secretary for many years of the Publishers' Association, and founding superintendent of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Putnam published Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, Edgar Allen Poe, and James Fenimore Cooper. Wikipedia contains a lengthy write-up on Putnam and his prominent grandson George P. Putnam.The comprehensive book has many tables and brief articles in alphabetical order.Cloth covers, rubbed, little edge wear, corners bumped. Name in ink inside front cover. Condition of the book is GOOD: heavy wear to covers and spine, spine heavily faded- missing pieces, dry and flaky, edges of text block darkened, pages clean, front hinge and spine detached, binding loose but fine.

He was a partner in several firms before establishing his own in 1848. In 1852 he founded Putnam's Magazine, later merging it with Scribner's Monthly. His publishing firm was extremely successful and remains today as part of the Penguin publishing group. He strong interest in art led him to become one of the founders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; he was the author of several books on history, biography, and reference.
