Soft cover. Condition: Good. Sand, George. A winter in Majorca (1838-1839) : foreword by Luis Ripoll / translated by Lieut. Colonel W. Kirkbride. Barcelona: Emege, 1980. Paperback, Good. Covers a little age-discoloured to white background, small creases to edges and corners. Binding strong. 196pp., b/w illustrations. Contents clean and bright. Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin de Francueil (1 July 1804 8 June 1876), best known by her pen name George Sand, was a French novelist, memoirist and journalist. One of the most popular writers in Europe in her lifetime, being more renowned than either Victor Hugo or Honoré de Balzac in England in the 1830s and 1840s, Sand is recognised as one of the most notable writers of the European Romantic era, with more than 50 volumes of various works to her credit, including tales, plays and political texts, alongside her 70 novels. A Winter in Majorca is an autobiographical travel novel written by Sand, at the time in a relationship with Frédéric Chopin. Although published in 1842, it appeared for the first time in 1841 in the Revue des deux Mondes. In it, Sand relates the details of her trip and stay with Chopin on the island of Majorca, due to the illness of the pianist. Sand, Chopin, and Sand's two children stayed in the charterhouse of Valldemossa for a few months, from the end of 1838 until February 1839, during which time they hoped that Chopin's tuberculosis would improve. However, the winter was hard and his health did not improve and so they quickly returned to Barcelona and eventually to Marseille and then Paris.
