VAN DOREN, Mark. WINDLESS CABINS. [NY]: Holt, [1940]. 8vo., pictorial cloth in dust jacket. First Edition. Signed presentation from Van Doren on half-title page: "Mark Van Doren for Eugene L. Delafield 12/10/47 -- the idea for this story started when I stopped with my family in a cabin at Hurricane, West Virginia. I thought it a good setting. Nothing like this happened there- I don't know where the story itself came from. `Windless' is opposite of `Hurricane.' M.V.D." Delafield has written in pencil on the opposite page: "Written for me on the background of the book, May 3, 1955." Two different inks are used on the page, so it appears Delafield presented the book again to Van Doren in 1955 for the inscription. Near fine (very tiny name stamped front pastedown & tiny Maine bookseller's label rear pastedown); little edgewear & moderate soil d/j. $100.00.
