They revolve around several families-black and white-who lived previously in the small town of Thornton, Tennessee, but over the years have moved to various cities-Memphis, Nashville, St Louis, Detroit, Chicago. Although the families are geographically removed from Thornton, the women remain in the past, clinging to the old traditions, customs, and social roles. The men react to the changing times by moving on in the world; they have left the women and some elderly servants and relatives behind--the widows of Thornton- to tend to the useless, inherited past. Thornton offers no judgment; he simply describes the disappearance of an era and a way of life.
